This is music at a high point. When people come together to create masterpieces that go beyond rhyming and rhythm. Beyond the plateau of stale rappers and pop artists in the world today. This song and video takes you to a place higher then that. A place where stories are told without boundaries and genres come together to bring you a unified piece that has no flaws. I know there are other examples that exist of music reaching this level, but it truly excited me to see this from the Roots. A band that I have been following for several years. I like how in this video they bring the classical arrangements into the song “tipping the scale”, as opposed to a separate track, how it appears on the album.
Undun is an album that I have really been studying. The the use of language, the structure of the story that is told, and even the classical music that brings it to a finish, all give us something to think about. And even if you don’t listen to music at this level, trust me when i say, this is still something you can bump to in your ride.
